Treat yourself with a relaxed walk along the ramparts at sunset, when the colors are incredibly intense. The honey-colored walls of Alghero, built by the Aragonese in the sixteenth century as a stronghold in the historic center, run from the elegant Piazza Sulis up to the city's marina. On one side is the sea, on the other the bell towers and the roofs of the city along the Bastioni Cristoforo Colombo,  Torre de Sant Jaume and Bastioni Marco Polo, from where you admire the profile of Capo Caccia (Cap de la Caça in Catalan). Be rewarded by the beautiful belvedere of the Tower of Castile, then go ahead along the Bastioni Magellano, up the steps leading to the port for a rewarding dinner with fish delicacies.

Alghero Private Walking Tour

Visit to the ramparts with the Aragonese Towers and the Gothic-Catalan Cathedral  of  Santa Maria  (XVI-XIX century). Alghero is also famous for its “Red Gold”:  the Corallium Rubrum, the most precious Coral of the Mediterranean Sea, that is caught here.

Day 6

Day 6 - Your Second Full Day in Alghero

Neptune's cave, a rewarding hike or relaxed stroll

Suggestion to explore on your own

Neptune's Cave is the main natural attraction of the rugged coast around capo Caccia: a spectacular sequence of ponds, narrow ravines, large halls with colonnades, stalactites and stalagmites shaped by the delicate force of nature. A visit that will leave you breathless.
The caves can be visited with a pleasant and very popular boat trip form the harbor or a more solitary, demanding but rewarding hike down and up the the Escala del Cabirol, 656 steps carved into the rock wall leaving you breathless... in every sense!

Neptune's Caves, a True Wonder of Nature

Coral jewelry, the "red gold" of Alghero

Suggestion to explore on your own

During a stroll around Alghero center, you will be surprised by the amount of red coral jewelry you will see. The ancient Greeks thought it was the petrified blood of Medusa, and that it had aphrodisiac powers and other properties, and in fact, made amulets from it. The coast of Alghero south of Capo Caccia is called Coral Riviera. Although an important element for the local economy, the fishing of red coral is under strict control: it takes place from May to October and at a depth of not less than 80 meters. For a complete understanding of this unique form of art, we recommend a visit to the Alghero Coral Museum, in an Art Nouveau villa, and bring home a precious memory of L’Alguer, bought from one of the city's jewelers.
