The glitziest city on the Caspian Sea, Baku aims to become the next Dubai. The government is pouring investment money into infrastructure and the tourist industry while adding daily flights to distant lands. Most of the wealth in Azerbaijan is here, and it’s easy to see. But unlike in Dubai, there's plenty of history to explore. Baku’s UNESCO-listed Old Town is ancient, yet very well maintained. Here, impressive buildings and labyrinthine streets will excite history buffs and anyone who appreciates unique architecture.

Cosmopolitan Tbilisi can be hard to place, with its combination of Byzantine churches, Soviet modernism, and Art Nouveau. There are even Turkish baths that harness the sulfurous waters that flow from hot springs and down a waterfall. Newfound prosperity has brought stunning new hotels, showy new parks, cable cars, and a monumental cathedral, but the Old Town’s charms remain untouched, save for the occasional paint touch up. The oldest district, which lies beneath a massive fortress, has its own unique form of architecture, with colorful wooden homes featuring large, carved balconies.

Suggestion to explore on your own

For your first night, we recommend taking a funicular up to, yes, Funicular Restaurant. There you can enjoy one of the city's best panoramic views. This excellent restaurant is located in a Soviet building that has been recently renovated, at the entrance to the Mtatsminda Amusement Park (which you can stroll around for free). The funicular itself dates back more than 100 years, but has fortunately likewise been renovated. Grab “Lagidze Waters” (a popular natural lemonade), and a "ponchik" filled donut, and take in the city from above.

Bathe with the Locals

Suggestion to explore on your own

The ancient Abanotubani District sits below the imposing fortress; the brick, domed rooftops of the baths bubble up like spring water. This is the most historic part of the city, as according to legend, it was the sulfur springs that enticed King Vakhtang Georgasali to settle the land and declare it the new capital city in the 5th century AD. There were once more than 60 bathhouses in Tbilisi where people could get squeaky clean or stay for a soak, letting the curative sulfur water ease their ailments. Fast-forward to today: there are five surviving bathhouses in Abanotubani where locals and travelers can experience a sulfur bath.

Yerevan stands out in Armenia for its distinctly European feel. In the center of this well-developed city you’ll find beautiful architecture, pedestrian zones, grand squares, and lovely green parks. But even in the midst of this urban haven, you’ll see Mount Ararat looming over the rooftops. There are numerous day trips just a short drive away. This is a city of art, culture and cuisine. The museums and music clubs are always worth visiting, and the restaurants offer a mix of modern, classic and international dining. The Yerevan Cascade is one stand-out site. It’s a series of landscaped gardens with sculptures and ornate fountains that forms a monumental staircase, while housing a lively arts center. In fact, you’ll find art and sculpture installed throughout the city. This attests to the local pride Yerevan takes in its culture. An entertaining destination with affordable prices, Yerevan is perfect for a stay of several days while you’re exploring Armenia.
