The glitziest city on the Caspian Sea, Baku aims to become the next Dubai. The government is pouring investment money into infrastructure and the tourist industry while adding daily flights to distant lands. Most of the wealth in Azerbaijan is here, and it’s easy to see. But unlike in Dubai, there's plenty of history to explore. Baku’s UNESCO-listed Old Town is ancient, yet very well maintained. Here, impressive buildings and labyrinthine streets will excite history buffs and anyone who appreciates unique architecture.

Then there's the famous Mud Volcanoes. Over a thousand of these mud volcanoes are known to exist in the world, and some 400 of them are in the coastal area of Azerbaijan. The Bibi-Heybat Mosque is also interesting. Built in the 1990s, it's a recreation of the mosque with the same name built in the 13th century, which was completely destroyed by the Bolsheviks in 1936. A visit to the Ateshgah Temple of fire worshippers should also be on your agenda. The complex is located on the Apsheron peninsula about 30 km from the center of Baku. Finally, you won't want to miss Yanar Dag, a natural gas flame in the hills. This is one of the most popular tourist sites in Azerbaijan. 1 Night in Sheki

Visiting Sheki will show you the real, traditional Azerbaijan. Don’t miss this rural gem while you’re in the country. This city on the slopes of the Caucasus Mountains is much poorer than Baku and is still a little rough around the edges. But that just means you’ll get to experience the authentic side of Azerbaijani culture when you visit. There’s a small village atmosphere here. It’s an interesting contrast to other destinations in the country. You’ll also notice more of a religious element in Sheki than in some of the larger cities in Azerbaijan. The Islamic architecture here, like the Palace of the Sheki Khans, is truly impressive. Sheki is ideal for a short stay. Other key sights are the bazaar and the caravanserai. Sheki is the perfect place to break up the journey between Azerbaijan and Georgia. After all, Sheki used to be one of the stops on the Silk Road connecting Baku and Tbilisi. Sheki's caravanserai were a welcome sight after a long day traveling. As well as being a stop on the silk old trading route Sheki was and still is a renowned producer of silks. While factory isn't easy to visit, you'll find the classic Sheki silk scarves on sale throughout the town. Beyond the city you’ll find lovely countryside. It's ideal for nature lovers, especially if you don’t mind a hawk swooping down for prey every once in a while!

1 Night in Sighnaghi

Located in the heart of Georgia's main wine-growing region, hilltop Sighnaghi offers impressive views of the Alazani Valley, with the Caucasus Mountains visible in the distance. Founded as a shelter against marauders, Sighnaghi’s city walls cover a vast area, much of which is wilderness. The town's center is picturesque and romantic, with its vistas and quaint streets. Signaghi's 18th and 19th century homes have been carefully maintained, and their colorful, almost Italianate style bring to mind Tuscan hill towns. Sighnaghi is such a popular wedding venue, that it even features a 24-hour wedding chapel, which also caters to tourists. Fortunately, the law was amended so that foreigners can divorce without having to return to Georgia!

Cosmopolitan Tbilisi can be hard to place, with its combination of Byzantine churches, Soviet modernism, and Art Nouveau. There are even Turkish baths that harness the sulfurous waters that flow from hot springs and down a waterfall. Newfound prosperity has brought stunning new hotels, showy new parks, cable cars, and a monumental cathedral, but the Old Town’s charms remain untouched, save for the occasional paint touch up. The oldest district, which lies beneath a massive fortress, has its own unique form of architecture, with colorful wooden homes featuring large, carved balconies.

Bathe with the Locals

Suggestion to explore on your own

The ancient Abanotubani District sits below the imposing fortress; the brick, domed rooftops of the baths bubble up like spring water. The district is the most historic part of the city, as according to legend, it was the sulphur springs that enticed King Vakhtang Georgasali to settle the land and declare it the new capital city in the 5th century AD. There were once more than 60 bathhouses in Tbilisi where people could get squeaky clean or stay for a soak, letting the curing Sulphur water ease their ailments. Fast-forward to today: there are five surviving bathhouses in the Abanotubani District where locals and travelers can experience a sulphur bath.

''This is our first ever attempt to sing the praises of a travel organization. JayWay exceeded all our expectations. It advertises itself as being expert guides to the Baltic countries, and our experience proves that they are experts in their field. JayWay's agents placed us with guides who were knowledgeable about the plight of the Jews over the years. We also appreciated meeting Darja, and were pleased with the way she followed up changing arrangement when required. We highly recommend JayWay Travel to those planning to visit the Baltics with a theme in mind.''

We had a marvelous time on our trip. Our Croatia contact, Josipa, was always available to help us if we had any glitches.  For example, we had scheduled to go on a walking tour at 10 am in Dubrovnik.  We went to where the tour was to start but realized that we had the wrong time set on our watches so that we had missed this walking tour.  We called Josipa and she was able to reschedule our tour immediately to noon.  The walking tour was fabulous and we appreciated Josipa's quick response! You were very helpful in helping us arrange our accommodations, suggesting tours, and providing wonderful drivers/guides who were very friendly and full of knowledge
